Well, feeling bad about not posting more. But, with too much to do, something suffers. Fall planting season in Houston. The little kale and chard keep being crushed by leaves falling from trees. Why people start seedlings inside. Somehow a segue into a discussion of aesthetics and politics featuring Adrienne Rich:
"There's a mainstream idea that you sacrifice aesthetics if you write about political positions," she said at a reception after the reading. "I don't think that's true." In one of her most pointed and overtly political poems, Rich sets her sights on Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld '54, subverting his oft-referenced quote about troop readiness. Responding to charges that the army entered the Iraq War ill-equipped, Rumsfeld stated, "You go to war with the army you have." "You come back from war with the body you have," reads Rich's poem "Calibrations," which is set in a military hospital full of soldiers who have lost limbs in Iraq.

People don't know how tough kale can be. Kale looks good, tastes good, and makes growing your own food easy; kale will make a tasty dish tastier and you make the world a better place when you grow and serve it for dinner. Grow your own poltics. I call mine Kale.
Total agreement. But then why is my politics being crushed by the force of a falling leaf? Such small little life forces, so easy to bend and snap. So frail. Hoping they get strong.
You and kale are stronger than you know. You impact people in ways you don't even know about, for the good. Kale impacts the body in ways we don't always feel, but it is there. A falling leaf can be protection, as well as a crushing force. Think mulch, think compost. Pull the leaves away from the small plants, daily, as an offering, as a ritual. Our politics will survive; the chard will not be charred. Visualize white light around their tender stems; visualize it around yourself and your loved ones.
Wow, I had no idea kale and chard were so metaphysical. Or that they would provoke so many political, psychological commentaries. Some people really love kale and chard. Yesterday a really bad thunderstorm almost killed them. Hope they make it. JP
